Myer-Briggs Type Indicator Essay

The Myers-Briggs type indicator is a psychological test that is based on the theories of Swiss Psychiatrist Carl Jung. The test divides people into 16 distinguishable personality types, based on high and low scores on four â€Å"scales† (Zemke, 1992). On the basis of their answers on the test, individuals are classified as extraverted or introverted, sensing or intuitive, thinking or feeling and judging or perceiving (Langton, Robbins and Judge, 2013). The MBTI has been used by many organizations around the world to assess communication styles of their employees and potential hires. Trainers and organization development specialists frequently use the MBTI in team building and communications training (Zemke, 1992). In a report released in September 1992, the National Research Council Committee on Techniques for the Enhancement of Human Performance concluded that trainees see their MBTI results as â€Å"true† and valuable. Eighty-four percent of army officers said the MBTI confirmed what they already knew about themselves. A significant percentage believed they would find this confirming feedback valuable in their work relationships (Zemke, 1992). The MBTI test can also be used by educational institutions such as Yorkville University to assess their students personalities and how they would approach the learning environment. Different personalities approach online learning in different ways (Russell, 2002). On an individual level, I believe that the MBTI can help an individual track their development in many different areas of their lives including work, family and other relationships. After completing the seventy-two question quiz, my results were quite consistent with my feelings. I received the results ESFP with Extraversion being 89%, Sensing at 12%, Feeling at 38% and Perceiving at 22%. Extraversion is defined as a personality factor that describes the degree to which a person is sociable, talkative and assertive. Sensing types are practical and prefer routine and order. Feeling types rely on their personal values and emotions. Perceiving types are flexible and spontaneous (Langton et. al, 2013). I have completed previous tests through other University courses as well as through organizations and my results have always been towards extraversion. As in the above case, I was again leaned more towards extraversion than any other of the personality types. I believe that the MBTI can sometimes be inaccurate based on an individuals mood and attitude when taking the test. In-spite of its popularity, the evidence is mixed as to whether the MBTI is a valid measure of personality – with most of the evidence suggesting that it is not (Langton et. al, 2013). The one problem with the test is that it forces a person into one type pr the other but some individuals may be both introverted and extraverted to some degree. Overall, I believe it is a good general psychological test that companies should incorporate when hiring or promoting new individuals. REFERENCES: Langton, N., Robbins, S. P., and Judge, T. Aegean, Roman, and Greek Cultures Essay

Aegean civilization flourished during the Bronze Age in Greece and the so-called Aegean Age. Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations were among those civilizations in the Aegean that has made its zenith during this era. Minoan civilization developed on the mountainous areas of Crete. Crete naturally possessed a wide-range of harbors which made it possible for the Minoans to settle and establish permanent livelihood as traders and merchants. From 1700 BC, they were involved in various trades including the important tin trading that is used to make bronze. Minoans focused their belief on female deities (note that Minoan women were usually appointed officials – a symbol of respect and authority). Many archeologists believed that the Minoans have equal treatment to men and women. Evidences from Minoan artworks showed that the equal status of men and women. Minoan artworks also showed evidences of the development of the Minoan civilization (three periods of Minoan civilization – EM, MM, and LM). Among the surviving Minoan arts is Minoan pottery. Different periods of Minoan civilization also showed different modes of design of their ceramics which include spirals in the Early Minoan, natural designs like flowers and birds during the Middle Minoan. After the demise of the Aegean civilization (during the Hittite invasion of Asia Minor), Greece began to make advances in culture. The development of the city-state allowed the propagation of culture across geography – enabling city-states to develop its own cultural tools. It can be said that the zenith of Greek culture was during the Hellenistic period (lasted for about 200 years). The Greek Hellenistic period span from 323 B. C. up to the Battle of Actium in 31 B. C. The Hellenistic period paved the way to many transformations of Greek art. Though the Classical concepts in art were not thoroughly abandoned, the birth of the Hellenistic period made the artists create different and unique art concepts. The artists during this time explored and manipulated their imagination on their subject. It was also during this period that higher degree of Naturalism took place as a logical conclusion to great sculptors like Praxitelis and Lysipos whose works demanded for the art representation of the human figure. In a Greek art (Boy Jockey), the bold expression of energy and power during great pressure was represented. The change of focus of the Hellenistic art from religious and naturalistic ideas and concepts to human expressions, psychological concern and theatrical background, paved the way to the sculptures that includes the natural physical surroundings with creative landscaping and theatrical groupings. The Nike of Samothrace is a sculpture that embraced the true meaning and understood the world through the application of certain techniques and aesthetic conventions. The winged goddess with her outstretched wings gracefully prevents the stone from falling due to gravity. The sculpture also represented the physical human presence and the external force within it. The representation evidently speaks for the Greeks acceptance of the physical power of human being and all other external forces acting on it. Elsewhere in the Mediterranean Sea, a new power was on the rise. Roman expansion to the East resulted to: 1) consolidation of the Greek peninsula under Roman rule; 2) the destruction of Macedonia, weakening of the Seleucid Empire, and the incorporation of the states of Bithynia and Pergamum to Rome; and 3) increased Greek influence on Roman culture. Although Roman art is essentially a derivation of Greek art, it is different in two respects. First, Roman art is generally a modification of Greek art. The invention of concrete during the 1st century A. D. greatly advanced Roman art and architecture. For example, the simple amphitheatre of the Greeks was transformed into a colosseum. Concrete allowed the construction of more complex structures. Second, Greek art was essentially religious in character (this is assertion is debatable for some historians). Roman art and architecture was a mixture of religious and political philosophies. The Roman poet Ovid often referred to the Greeks as the champion of religious authority – the center of religious worship in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Romans as the bearer of Greek culture. Here, Ovid was essentially arguing that Roman culture cannot be solely religious in nature. As the forerunner of ancient democratic institutions, Rome must distinguish itself politically from its subject peoples. With Roman domination of the Mediterranean, Greek culture spread to all parts of the Roman Empire. In the East, it became the ethos of a new cultural revival – Greek in orientation. This revival was essentially the last if not the least of Hellenism prior to the rise of Christianity as the dominant religion in the Roman Empire. Before the Christian culture, Greek culture was the predominant mode of humanistic endeavor. However, one must understand that Greek culture was a partial derivation of Aegean culture – a culture which is embellished in myth, tragedy, and greatness. Here, one can clearly see the development of Western culture – a result of the transfusion of Greek culture and Christian learning.

Compare and Contrast the poems Emily Dickinson because I could not Essay - 1

Compare and Contrast the poems Emily Dickinson because I could not stop for death and A.E Houseman immortal parts - Essay Example For instance, the analysis of death in both is examined from a solemn point of view. Dickinson uses symbolism and allegory to communicate the futility of life when death strikes (Holden and Birch 113). There is the use of humanism to make death animate especially as noted in the first stanza, second line. The persona depicts the powerful nature of death to pluck humanity from their comfortable environments to a state of oblivion. In other words, Dickinson’s use of allegory takes the form of being powerless in the presence of death. On the other hand, A.E Housman uses phonological sounds such as consonance, alliteration and assonance to reveal the permanency of death. In the first stanza, he uses the morning dream and night to dream to reveal the times of life that are affected by death. Additionally, in the superseding lines he uses say and day that are both consonance and assonance in the representation of the futility of life. There is also the use of symbolism in the third stanza when he explains about a tongue that speaks with lungs that shout. This is another revelation of how death is treated with respect and reverence in the lives of both personas in the poems. However, it is also noteworthy to observe the use of metonym in the poems to explain the internal and external repercussions of death. For example, in ‘The Immortal Part’ by A.E. Housman, he describes a brain that hums hive of dreams in the last line of the third stanza. This is a clear indication of the fundamental roles played by the brain for human judgment in life. Apparently, this is also manifested in Emily Dickinson’s poem where she talks about a death that did not acknowledge hurry in the first line, second stanza (Christensen 139). Another significant comparison is based on the use of personification and iambic pentameter to communicate the theme therein. For instance,

Developments of research on Alzheimer's Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Developments of research on Alzheimer's - Essay Example The relationship of neuropathological features of Alzheimer’s Disease to the emergence of cognitive deficits, is not fully understood currently. However, â€Å"the process that results in the accumulation of   AÃŽ ² as amyloid triggers the complex pathological changes ultimately leading to cognitive impairments† (Sun, 2007, p.40), known as the ‘amyloid cascade’ hypothesis. Lichtien and Mohajeri (2008) state that the high morbidity, socioeconomic costs, and lack of specific treatments indicate the importance of research on Alzheimer’s Disease. Evidence from Lichtien and Mohajeri’s (2008) research on the efficacy of anti-amyloid immunization strategies, indicates that they serve as effective protective mechanisms against Alzheimer’s Disease. However, the underlying mechanisms of action of therapeutic antibodies, particularly their impact on the complex amyloid ÃŽ ² peptide (AÃŽ ²) metabolism and various AÃŽ ² equilibria present both on the internal and external sides of the central nervous system, are not fully clear as yet. Moreover, physiological AÃŽ ² metabolism is not fully understood because of inadequate analytical tools to characterize and quantify treatment effects. Further, biomedical research is aimed at developing predictable therapies minimizing the risk of adverse effects such as brain inflammation and/ or hemorrhage caused by anti- AÃŽ ² immunization protocols. The researchers found that standard Enzyme Linked Immune Sorbant Assay (ELISA) protocols are inadequate in rational drug design, and there is a requirement for more complex analytical tools to be developed and applied. Tests ensuring greater reliability in the assessments of AÃŽ ² in free versus protein-bound form, as well as monomeric versus aggregated AÃŽ ², will be key to identifying the mechanisms forming the basis for efficacy and safety of the

BRAND MANAGEMENT AND RESEARCH Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

BRAND MANAGEMENT AND RESEARCH - Essay Example To be able to become a market leader it is vital to guide or, to a certain extent, control the customers. If the firm, by means of the obsolete portion of marketing theory, merely follows what the customers want, the brand will certainly, in the future, be surpassed in the market. The explanation is that unless there is a zero turnaround time, or the possibility of delivering immediately what is demanded for, the firm will fail to keep up (Nilson 2003). By the time the firm has created, manufactured and delivered what the customers requested for, they possibly have modified their preferences or a competitor may have by then introduced something into the marketplace satisfying the demand. Moreover, it is not possible for a customer to identify what a producer can offer. Merely listening to customers is to abandon the brand to the consumers and the management of the firm—and abandoning accountability is seldom a way to develop a strong brand identity, value, image, and positioni ng. The objective of this essay is to analyse in detail the McDonald’s brand in terms of its identity, value, image, and positioning. The Brand The significance of brand management is simply described by John Stewart, the CEO of Quaker Oats (Armstrong & Kotler 2007). He stated that â€Å"If this business split up I will give you all the bricks mortar and land and I would keep the brands and trademarks, and I would fare better than you† (Armstrong & Kotler 2007, 214). This evidently means that a strong brand can be more priceless than all the assets of a firm which make brand management very crucial. According to De Chernatony (2006), â€Å"a successful brand is an identifiable product, service, person or place, augmented in such a way that the buyer or user perceives relevant, unique, sustainable added values which match their needs most closely† (p. 13). A brand, in addition, can be defined as a system of signs and symbols that engages the customer in an invent ed or symbolic process that provides tangible value to a product or service (Kapferer 2008). The symbol of McDonald’s, which is an arching M, is only an M until every brand message has been sent or received by the potential customer. Herbert Rotfeld (2008) examines further the other abstract advantages and values branding can put in to a product or service. Similarly, Kapferer (2004) claimed that the brand is a mark whose objective is to express the hidden aspects of the product or service which are not readily available to the senses. McDonald’s is considered as one of the most popular brands across the globe. This essay will show how McDonald’s tries to constantly improve its brand by focusing on both its customers’ and brand owner’s perspectives. It also acknowledges the various stages in the branding and marketing process. Branding builds an identity and image for an organisation, product, or service. In particular, the brand image implies how customers distinguish or recognise the company. The mechanism of brand management will only be effective when a company performs and communicates itself in a trustworthy way (Nilson 2003). Techniques of marketing communication, such as advertising and promotions, are used to build brand identity, images, appeal, and methods which provide the brand its particular image (p. 49). This is represented at McDonald’s by its Golden Arches. The McDonald’s Brand McDonald’

Family Values Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Family Values - Essay Example She was caught off guard and humiliated over something small. Although the teacher has rules, to humiliate a child in front of the entire class was not the best idea that was available. Because of the way that Emily handled this situation, she is clearly in Kohlberg's Preconventional Morality stage and within stage one (Gould, 2009, p. 2). In this stage, she is more afraid of punishment than she is about going back to the class. In this situation, she was following the rules and the teacher created a situation that made her leave the class rather than face the embarrassment of going back. She avoids punishment by not going back to class and not telling her parents what happened. The teacher could have called Emily to his desk or asked her to speak to him after class. If he had done so, this would have given Emily a chance to explain t him what had happened instead of being humiliated in front of the class. Emily could have talked to her parents about the situation immediately so that it did not move into more fear. Unfortunately, from the case study, it did not seem that she was able to talk to her parents about it perhaps because of fear of punishment. Her parents do not seem to be involved very much with Emily because they were not suspicious of her wanting to stay out of school, although this was out of the ordinary for her. In the classroom situation, Emily has been classically conditioned to do what she is told and follow the rules. She may also have to follow rules at home without question. Because of this, she seems to have a high level of anxiety when she has to confront a situation as she did in Mr. Robinson's class. According to Richards and Blanchette (2004), classical conditioning can be used to understand how to work with people who have challenges with emotions. In this situation, it would have been beneficial for Emily to talk to her friend or to her parents about the situation.

Andy Warhols Installation of Shoes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Andy Warhols Installation of Shoes - Essay Example The essay "Andy Warhol’s Installation of Shoes" states the famous installation, Installation of Shoes, of Andy Warhol. The artist in question used this collection to tell people that not only the finest examples of art should be presented, but ordinary things as well. I find this particularly interesting and inspiring since it opens a completely new perspective on what is art: from then on every object that is found in reality could be presented as a work of art. I think that the goals which were originally set by Warhol correspond to my own goal, namely allowing people to develop a different, more accurate understanding of what art is. Speaking of what makes the collection that I present personal, I might suggest that I often use squishy toys to deal with some stress that I am exposed to. That is why these toys and this collection means to me a lot: it is almost a silent witness of all stress that I have endured in my life. One might suggest that because of this the memories that are attached to work are negative; however, the situation is quite the opposite: thought I experienced stress every time it touched a squishy toy, I felt a relief from it when I put it away. That is why the memories are quite good. As it has already been mentioned the major influence on my work is Andy Warhol’s Installation of shoes. The process of making my art work was simple: I make boxed out of color paper and attached them together by the sided. Afterwards, I placed a squishy toy inside of each box.

Capstone on United Bankshares, Inc Research Paper

Capstone on United Bankshares, Inc - Research Paper Example The vision is to provide loans and other financial support instruments to organizations and businesses that are very productive from their banking subsidiaries. Stakeholders are those who affect and are affected by the operations of a business (Freeman, 2009: p3). The main stakeholders of Bankshares Inc are their staff members who are knowledgeable business professional with in-depth knowledge of the markets and financial trends. The second group of stakeholders are the subsidiary banks that provide the financing when the bank gets good and accurate forecasts. A third group of primary stakeholders are the businesses that acquire loans from UBSI. Porters Five Forces describes a given industry or competitive terrain for an organization (Henry, 2010). In doing this, there are five distinct forces that define the competitive position and scope of the industry. They include: 2. Threat of Suppliers: This is a major threat because the suppliers of loans and other banking services of USBI could build in-house business advisory and investment banking units and not need USBIs services. 4. Ease of Entry: It is fairly easy for anyone to start a financial advisory and brokerage firm. However, it is not very easy to build the kind of goodwill USBI has with banks. This include owning subsidiaries and controlling affairs. 5. Competitive Rivalry: This include other providers of services similar to USBI. This include Bank of America Corporation, BB&T Corporation and BankUnited Inc. These are financial intermediaries that own bank subsidiaries and look for investment opportunities that have very high yield. This is high and provides a major cause of concern for UBSI 1. Subsidiary banks: There is the need for the banks in the USBI network to be prepared for the expansion. They would have to be adjusted and examined for expansion and growth of the operations and activities. The units need to be given much

Roles and Responsibilities of a Newly Qualified Nurse. Professional Essay

Roles and Responsibilities of a Newly Qualified Nurse. Professional Role Development - Essay Example This statistic demonstrates the importance of professional role adaptation, growth and development, as well as the significance of knowledge in the roles and responsibilities of a newly trained and qualified nurse. The school-bred values should reconcile with the ‘real world’ values of nursing practice. This is crucial in mitigating discrepancies that may occur when the new graduates take up their roles in healthcare service delivery (Duchscher 2008, p.3). Knowledge on roles and responsibilities is crucial in the pre-empting of role ambiguity and resultant job dissatisfaction and career disillusionment that may arise. The consolidation of the attained knowledge and skills is essential in availing a smooth transition from student to a professional practitioner. For a newly qualified nurse, the core concerns lie in care delivery and management as well as personal and professional development (Burton and Ormrod 2007, p.2). Critical Discussion The fields of practice that new ly qualified nurses can specialize in are diverse and may incorporate acute care of the elderly, coronary and palliative care, mental health nursing, or substance abuse. The roles of a nurse span from being caregivers to counsellors. They also advocate for the client and are change agents in the sense of modifying the client’s lifestyle in a healthier pattern. The primary role of a nurse is provision of proper care and protection to the patients to safeguard their health and wellbeing (Duchscher 2008, p. 5). Nurses’ roles include providing proper health and social care in a safe and valuable manner to patients (Burton and Ormrod 2007, p. 3). In addition, nurses should also respond to patient’s needs and deliver care within their context such as drug administration and infection control. Nurses also provide knowledge and support to patients and monitor vital signs of patients. Newly qualified nurses have a responsibility of maintaining the set standards of care a s well as conform to the set ethical and legal decisions. The transition into the nursing profession, especially the initial adjustment is usually marred by feelings of anxiety, insecurity, inadequacy, and instability. This revolves around the newly trained and qualified nurse’s roles, responsibilities, relationships, and knowledge (Burton and Ormrod 2007, p.4). Transition shock is occasioned by the fact that new graduates are confronted by a wide range and scope of physical, intellectual, emotional, developmental, and sociocultural changes as they take up their fresh roles. The newly trained and qualified nurses must, therefore, institute mechanisms that shape readiness for the new roles. Preparedness and reinforcement in role transition is essential in order to reconcile the associated intensity and duration of the transition experience. Newly trained and qualified nurses should be ready for the escalating workplace expectations. A newly trained nurse should be competent in handling the new roles. The essence of having prior knowledge of the profession and workplace expectations is outstanding as it bridges the transition shock. Knowledge on role transition is crucial in constructing successful integration of nursing professionals into the potentially stressful and highly dynamic context of professional practice. This calls for a better

In what sense are media audiences (a) active and (b) powerful Discuss Essay

In what sense are media audiences (a) active and (b) powerful Discuss with reference to the strengths and weaknesses of 'active audience' theory - Essay Example genre, subject matter, style), e) by time (e.g. primetime or daytime) Audiences originate both in society and in media and their contents: either people stimulate an appropriate supply of content, or the media attract people to the content they offer. To create the media audiences, we consider audience as often brought into being by some new technology as in the invention of film, radio or television or attracted by other channels such as newspaper or radio. Through the media source, the audience is thereby defined. (Mcquail’s Mass Communication Theory p.396) No one could possibly wrong to say that one cannot finish a day without encountering the media in any form. You may wake up to the sound of the radio, play an MP3 on your way to school, read billboards in the street and watch television or DVD movies in the evening. We are all therefore part of the audience if in any other way we experience such activities. In the early times, the media is used to persuade people to buy products through advertising, or to follow politicians through their propaganda. There have also been fears that the contents of media texts can make their audiences behave in different ways- become more violent for example. The effect of media to audience is highly influential. As agents of knowledge, the media is transforming its audience. (Hartley, 2007.). The ‘media’ that we think of today are actually the latest inventions. To go back through centuries and decades, things like computers, television, film, and photography would have seemed impossible to olden days. One hundred years ago is what we call the pre-media times where people made their own sort of entertainment such as reading, watching plays, or simply stroll around a park and mingle with some people getting some fresh air. Today, media has evolved in a great extent. The effect on the audience can be positive and negative. Theatre-sized audiences are accommodated so that

Warren Buffet Case Study Essay Example for Free

Warren Buffet Case Study Essay Executive Summary: On May 24, 2005, it was announced that Berkshire Hathaway would acquire PacifiCorp. from parent, Scottish Power, for $5.1 billion in cash and $4.3 in liabilities and preferred stock (Bruner, Eades, Schill). After the announcement of the acquisition, the market responded very positively the same day. Berkshire’s stock price had increased by 2.4%, PacifiCorp.’s parent, Scottish Power’s by 6.28% and SP 500 closed up 0.02%. Berkshire Hathaway’s 2.4% shares increase was equivalent to $2.55 billion. Since this is not consistent with results of other acquisitions of the same order, it must be Warren Buffet’s â€Å"cult†-like following that allows this to happen. Rather than rationally studying the market information of the acquisition, the general public puts their trust in Warren Buffett as an investment guru. Berkshire held many different types of industries in their portfolio, but prior to the acquisition of PacifiCorp., Berkshire did not have significant investment in the energy sector. The now more diversified investment portfolio of Berkshire after the acquisition was expected to provide more stable returns. Often throughout the case study, Buffett’s view on a company’s â€Å"intrinsic value† was spotlighted as one of his predominate investing strategies. Book value and the investment outline are the two alternatives to intrinsic value. Buffett rejects them because these alternatives neither can give clear and accurate information about the expected profit in the investment. A company’s intrinsic value, though, is a company’s value relative to the present value of its discounted future cash flows (Bruner, Eades, Schill). And this is how Buffett evaluates his investments, asking will future cash flows provide an acceptable return on investment. Problem: The primary problem in the Warren Buffett case study would be whether or not the intrinsic value of PacifiCorp. justifies Berkshire Hathaway’s bid price? Secondary problems presented include how does the PacifiCorp. acquisition stand up against Berkshire’s â€Å"elephant only† approach to investing? Thus, whether or not PacifiCorp.’s acquisition would be able to further Berkshire’s already staggering annual growth rate of 24%? Analysis: Drawing from the financial statements in the text’s exhibits, PacifiCorp.’s annual operating cash flows equaled $1.76 billion. Given this calculation, it would seem as though it would be a relatively short time before Berkshire Hathaway would accumulate enough value on the acquisition for them to receive an expedient return on their investment. â€Å"The cost of lost opportunity† is a philosophy of Warren Buffett’s that also applies to this case (Bruner, Eades, Schill). By entering into the energy market with the acquisition of PacifiCorp., the firm can hopefully continue on their incredible growth rate trend. Without it, Berkshire would likely have eventually plateaued. Recommendation: It is advised that Berkshire Hathaway follow through with the acquisition of PacifiCorp. The firm will continue to cycle large sums of cash flows through their company with this deal, therefore inducing growth and also adding intrinsic value to their firm. The firm also has a lot to gain by entering into the energy market, which already has a stronghold on American interests and adds diversity to their portfolio.

Traditional Japan In Spirited Away

Traditional Japan In Spirited Away The protagonist of the film, Chihiro, has lived a pampered life in the city and is naive and unprepared for adulthood. Her parents are portrayed as greedy and irresponsible in the symbol of the credit card wielding father turning into an overindulgent hog. (Broderick, 2003) The spirit world that she unknowingly enters represents the Taisho period of Japanese history (around 1912 to 1926), a popular setting in Anime, but of particular personal significance to Miyazaki. (Yoshioka, 2008) Childhood memories have influenced his use of this time which does not simply create a feeling of nostalgia, but, as Yoshioka says, merges personal experience into a larger sense of past. (Yoshioka, 2008: p.257) The aspects of traditional Japan displayed in the film vary from the extravagant grandeur of the bathhouse to the simple, yet quaint wooden houses and shops in the spirit town. The bathhouse even includes sliding paper doors and massive ornate Satsuma-ware vases all representative of a prosperous location in Japan during the 1920s. It serves to act as an opposition to the modern character of Chihiro upon who the traditional aspects of Japanese society are lost. (Denison, 2007) Denison writes that the bathhouse holds valuable lessons for modern (Japanese) society, including, not allowing such a healthy eclectic heritage disappear in a culture obsessed with the furthering of technology as well as keeping the Japanese youth educated about their roots and heritage. Some of the major characters in the film also incorporate aspects of traditional Japanese folklore. Spirits have been featured as characters in many ancient Japanese folk tales, generally influenced by the two major religions Shinto and Buddhism. The ancient River Spirit which Chihiro helps to clean appears to have a face which resembles a Japanese Noh theatre mask. Another theatrical mask is also featured on the character of No-Face. The film also alludes to the practicing of religion in Japan and the ignorance of the youth towards it. In a scene at the beginning of the film Chihiro does not recognise some Shinto shrines and her mother explains their role yet it is evident that she does not consider them important saying some people think little spirits live there. (Spirited Away, 2001) It is evident from Miyazakis films as a whole that the spirituality is a common and often prominent theme, particularly, but not exclusively, among his films aimed at children. Certain themes recur in Miyazakis films. In Spirited Away many of these appear such as childhood, materialism and most notably environmentalism. The story of the spirit Haku links to the arguments mentioned so far about the portrayal of tradition. The disappearance of Hakus home the Kohaku River due to materialism has led to his forgetting of the past and even his name alluding to the real possibility of people in Japan being so focused on the future they forget elements of their past, in this case an ancient river paved over to build apartments. (Osmond, 2008) Other Miyazaki films have also included the relationship between the spirits or gods and humans, mainly about the difficulty of the two living in harmony. Princess Mononoke (1997), Ponyo (2008) and My Neighbour Totoro (1988) are examples of this with each also carrying the theme of environmentalism. All of the points mentioned so far have reinforced that the world featured within Spirited Away shows a traditional, typically Japanese culture which aims to critique modern Japanese society as well as educate the films young target audience about the importance of tradition. Thanks to Disneys worldwide distribution deal with Miyazakis production company Studio Ghibli, the market for anime has been expanded so hugely that theres a now global awareness of not only modern and pseudo-futuristic Japan but also heightened understanding of Japanese tradition; fans (are) engaged with the cultural origins of anime texts. (Cubbison, 2005: p.45) This market has been so developed that anime now seems to cater specifically for the international market within its films. The complex identities of Miyazakis characters, such as Haku or Yubaba in Spirited Away are, according to Denison, created to appeal to a Hollywood-saturated world market. These characters employ a number of traits not inherently Japanese. Also, some aspects of the architecture and artwork featured in the film are not typically Japanese but contain elements of Western styles. An example of this can be found in the small thatched cottage owned by Zeniba, the kind twin sister of the unpleasant witch Yubaba, the owner of the aforementioned bathhouse. The Anime film industry has varying takes on the issue of tradition, but Miyazaki has taken on the issue whole heartedly in his films. Miyazakis idea of the identity of the Japanese person, along with his concept of the loss of traditional culture in the technological Mecca of contemporary Japanese society, has proved significant in the visual appeal of his films as well as their artistic value. Not only does he reference parts of culture such as art, architecture and religion, but also references traditional theatre and behaviour (such as the removal of shoes before entering a house). Despite the fact that Miyazakis uses some hybridity with other cultures in his portrayal of tradition, the fundamental Japaneseness of Spirited Away is clear and irrefutable. 1030 words References Broderick, M. 2003. Theory Of Natural Selection By Darwin

Theory Of Natural Selection By Darwin This paper gives an explanation of Darwins theory of natural selection. As well, the paper fully gives a description of natural selection in terms of modern evolutionary synthesis of the 20th century. The paper also gives application of the principles of natural selection to explain the current problem of antibiotics resistance in bacteria. Finally the paper gives a summary of scientific theories about evolution before Darwins discovery of natural selection. Generally this is a very important theory which has been greatly adopted by students and teachers of genetics presently. Outline Introduction Summary of Scientific Theories about Evolution before Darwins Discovery of Natural Selection Description Of How The Discovery Was Made By Darwin. Natural Selection In Terms Of the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis Of the 20th Century Natural Selection and Its Relationship to Antibiotic Resistance in Bacteria Conclusion Introduction Charles Darwin is known to be the father of evolution and heredity and came up with principles that govern heredity. His one outstanding principle is that of natural selection that dictates that if evolution was elucidated as a car, and then the theory of natural selection would be its engine. The theory categorically states that its the nature that controls and select organisms, which tend to have favorable characteristics for survival while at the same eliminating species that are inferior (Fairfield, 2000). Darwins theory is significantly a very important landmark in the process of evolution and origin of species. The principle is regarded as the key to the formation of new and superior species from old and existing ones. This is to say that nature selects superior traits, which are transmitted to the offspring in a manner that is independent on the other. The major explanation behind the theory is that one superior allele tends to be dominant over the others, blending a genetic make up and traits that influence a certain trait segregate during organism growth and development. Therefore, this research paper looks at all principles of natural selection, its relationship to the current problem of antibiotics resistance in bacteria, and its description in terms of modern evolutionary synthesis of the 20th century. Summary of Scientific Theories about Evolution before Darwins Discovery of Natural Selection Darwins theory of Natural Selection is generally regarded as a significant landmark in the origin of organisms and evolution process. Before Darwin, many scientists like him alleged that species evolved from other species or antecedent. Mostly during those times there was no any scientific evidence to prove that concept hence many theories went unnoticed. Prior to Darwins theory especially in medieval times, the concept of evolution was not much appreciated for the reason that origin of organisms was regarded as Gods creation. This idea claimed that organisms came into existence in a way that they were unchanged, hence going against the notion of evolution. Many scientists like Immanuel Kant established a notion of descent that was close to modern view; were he suspected that organisms may have originated from a common ancestor .His analysis emerged from studies of Orang Utang which he claimed had capacity to develop structures similar to those of man. Despite the fact that his theory is currently linked with modern views; the theory never gave any plausible mechanism that would drive changes in organisms.Carolus Linnaeus is another scientist who is viewed as the father of contemporary taxonomy in relation to his work of hierarchical classification in both plants and animals. In his theory, he viewed hybridization in plants as a process that could produce new plant species. However, he still supported the theory of creation that goes against the theory of evolution. Erasmus Darwin (Charles Darwins grandfather) was also a very illustrious naturalist who believed that life could have originated from a common ancestor. His theory states th at the disuse of organisms parts could in their own mechanism make the parts grow or shrink. Jean-Baptiste Lamarcks theory of evolution is another medieval theory that has been discredited by modern experimental evidences. His theory concentrated on the idea that living organisms could transfer certain traits acquired during natural life to its offspring. He saw organisms as immutable and not permanent (Zirkle, 1941). Another theory about Evolution before Darwins Discovery of Natural Selection is the theory of population growth that was coined by Thomas Malthus between 1766-1834. According to the theory, Malthus claimed that populations could produce large number of offsprings that could have capacity to stay alive on the available limited resources available. He viewed diseases, famine, and poverty to be the consequence of overpopulation. He never believed on the concept of evolution and he viewed the natural calamities as the wrath of God. Description of How the Discovery was Made By Darwin Charles Darwin started formulating his world-renowned theory of Natural Selection in late 1830s and early 1840s, but the process went on silent for about 25 years. Darwin conducted widespread research on animals and plants in order to learn the critical process of evolution. It was during his research work in Galà ¡pagos Islands that made him understand the theory of evolution. In his studies, he observed that birds dwelling in different islands displayed minor differences in their physical features .On one occasion he found out that different species of Finches birds had different beak sizes and shapes. After analysis, he discovered that the difference in beak sizes and shape was because of food available in particular islands (Fairfield, 2000). Contrary to this results, Darwin results showed that their was only one specific Finches species in South America, which summed up the idea that Finches species in Galà ¡pagos could have developed from species found in central parts of South America. Further research work showed that this Finches species reproduced and survived, while those that could not familiarize themselves with environment died. As a result, Darwin concluded that organisms belonging to similar species illuminated some unique variations among them (Sober, 1984).Organisms possessing favorable characteristics showed capacity to live and reproduce, consequently passing the acquired trait genetic material to the offsprings from one generation to another. With the help of Alfred Russel Wallace, would had also similar results for the birds he used in his studies, established similar theories which then led to development of the book On the Origin of Species, which was published in 1859 (Zirkle, 1941). Natural Selection In Terms Of the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis Of the 20th Century Modern Evolutionary Synthesis is defined as an amalgamation of concepts or ideas from different evolution and biological area of expertise, which gives an extensively accepted explanation of evolution. The concept of Natural Selection generally relies on the idea of heredity, which developed before the fundamental models of genetics. Evidence of natural selection in relation to Modern Evolutionary Synthesis Of the 20th Century relates to Mendels theory and research work. Despite the fact that Gregor Mendel, known to be the father of heredity who came up with principles that govern heredity, was a modern concept of Darwin work, his work became appreciated in early years of the of 20th century (Hasan, 2005). This came because of integration of Darwin theory and Mendels work which one outstanding principle is that of independent assortment which dictates that the allele pairs will separate in an independent manner during gamete formation. This is to say that the traits would be transmit ted to the offspring in a manner that is independent of the other. The major explanation behind this notion relies on the Natural Selection strategy where alleles that are dominant over the others are passed over to the next generation, where the hereditary units then influence a certain trait to segregate during gamete formation. Another evidence of natural selection in relation to Modern Evolutionary Synthesis Of the 20th Century relates to T. H. Morgan research work on Drosophila melanogaster. The concept of Natural Selection has helped establish a relationship between Chromosomal Theory of Inheritance and the Mendelian Theory Genetics, which has established that instead of mutations creating species in single steps, it creates variations in genetic makeup that varies among populations. Other modern evolution advances relates to research works of W. D. Hamilton and John Maynard Smith, which have led to development of Gene-Centric View of Evolution in the mid 1960s. This synthesis has increased the extent of Darwinian Theory of Natural Selection to include consequent scientific advances that include genetics and DNA analysis. The work of G. Ledyard Stebbins, a botanist, is another most important contributor to the natural selection in relation to Modern Evolutionary Synthesis (Sober, 1984). His work has extended the concept of natural selection where the effects of polyploidy and hybridization shows dihybrid cross involving linkage of two genes which have no crossing over. From the Law of Independent Assortment, alleles from genes assort in an independent manner during formation of the gametes. Natural Selection and Its Relationship to Antibiotic Resistance in Bacteria In recent past, some bacteria species have showed extraordinary ability to develop resistance to certain types antibiotics, which are commonly used to treat most common illnesses. An antibiotic refers to a natural matter or material that is released by fungi or bacteria to kill competing micro organisms for limited available resources. In recent past scientists have discovered that some bacteria strains have started showing resistance to certain antibiotics through different mutations, or alterations in the organisms genetic material (DNA). This resistance results in situation where changes occur in the bacteria molecular material and mostly results from events such as antibiotic over and under prescription, poor hygiene, and environmental changes. If the target bacteria obtain changes in its molecular material for genes coding a specific protein, the antibiotic then cannot bind to affected protein hence the mutant bacterial organism survive (Purdom, 2007). Under the effects of antibiotics, the process of Natural Selection occurs, thus favoring the growth, development, reproduction, and survival and of the mutant or malformed bacteria. Concept of natural selection also plays part when bacteria obtain mutated genetic material from other micro organisms, where they swap genetic material from each other. This allows transfer of DNA into the bacteria, thus altering its structure making them transfer new DNA to its offsprings.Presence of new DNA makes the next generation resistant to antibiotic. The concept of natural selection and mutation supports bacteria populations to become resistant to antibiotics. On the other hand, these changes through natural selection also lead to emergence of strains with defective proteins that tend to have abnormal functions. Conclusion Charles Darwin is known to be the father of evolution and heredity and came up with principles that govern heredity. His one outstanding principle is that of natural selection, which categorically states that, nature controls and selects organisms that have favorable characteristics for survival while at the same eliminating species that are inferior. In conclusion, it is agreeable that Charles Darwin theory of natural selection is very important in respect to heredity and evolution.

Social Darwinism: Herbert Spencer and The Catholic Church Essay

Herbert Spencer was the most important Social Darwinist of the 19th Century. He was the first to begin thinking about evolutionist long before Darwin came out with his book on the "Origins of Species". He had many theories such as that everything evolves from one basic creature and then breaks off into more diverse species (Haberman (Hab.), 171). His theory was that social, political, and intellectual movements were caused by the development from the homogeneous to the heterogeneous. Spencer once stated, "If the advance of man towards greater heterogeneity is traceable to the production of many effects by one cause, still more clearly may the advance of society towards greater heterogeneity be so explained" (Haberman 2 (Hab2)) Spencer believed that governments should not try to change social environment, for it would hamper with processes of nature and individual liberty (Hab). He had a theory that evil would disappear if "every man may claim the fullest liberty to exercise his faculties"(Hab). Although this would onl...

The Lost Generation :: essays papers

The Lost Generation During World War I, many of the men who fought were only about nineteen years young. These men experienced horrors beyond belief in a matter of years, which is ten times worse than a normal man experiences his whole life. This generation of men, from 1914-1918, who fought in a great war and lived in constant fear of their last breathe, while we enjoy parties, the freedom of being a teenager, and able just to kick back and enjoy life at its prime. This is the lost generation. As tensions grew in Europe during the early twentieth century young teenagers throughout were going to grade school and enjoying life to its fullest. Little do these children know that in a matter of years they will be fighting in one of the most gruesome wars in history. While they were in school the leaders of Europe were contemplating the thought of war and forming alliances. Many people thought that if they went to war, it would be over and done with before they knew it. The people who said this were the lucky ones; they didn't have to fight in it. The kids who did fight in it didn't know what to expect. They were taken from their sheltered homes and thrown into unimaginable chaos. World War I should never have been fought. It was because of a royal family feud that caused millions of deaths. How would one feel if one saw their best friend blown up right before their very own eyes? These kids saw their comrades choke to death because of the fatal mustard gas. They saw friends get shot in the stomach and die slowly of excruciating pain. The dead bodies were innumerable and they had to face their enemy eye to eye and then kill them. These men starved and had to fight off giant rats. Most of these men died of a cause they did not know. If you look at The Gulf War back in 1991, any intelligent person would say how easily we won. We decimated Iraq in a few weeks for two reasons; because of top grade equipment and because of excellently trained men. The men who fought in The Gulf War were between 26 and 27 years old. They were properly trained and had the audacity that younger soldiers lack. The older men also do not loose their youth. They had something that no one can take away, memories of their childhood and teenage years.

Essays on the Diary of Anne Frank †The Real Heros :: Diary of Anne Frank Essays

The Diary of Anne Frank – The Real Heros The Diary of Anne Frank could not have been written without the selfless help of Mr. Kraler and Miep, the Dutch office-workers. In extremely hard times, they provided the necessary help for the survival of the eight people hiding out in the attic of a factory. Mr. Kraler often visited the two families in hiding, and made sure that no one found out about them, while Miep Brought them food, books and other things that they requested. They were real world heroes because few people would go through so much even for their friends. Mr. Kraler was an old man who felt that no people should suffer like the Jews. He took it upon himself and Miep to give the two families in hiding everything they needed for survival. He made sure that none of the workers found out about the secret annex. Right in the beginning of the story, Mr. Kraler installed a new dead bolt in the secret door for their safety. Mr. Kraler and Miep have been putting food stores on shelves and making sure there was enough drugs, soap and linen in store. Mr. Kraler is modest, when Mrs. Frank says the they wouldn't even be alive without Mr. Kraler's help, Mr. Kraler says "Please. Please. You make us seem very heroic. It isn't that at all. We simply don't like the Nazis." Mr. Kraler did everything within his abilities to provide the Franks and the Van Daans with the best hiding place in Amsterdam. Miep was a young woman who was engaged and also had to work everyday and yet she always found the time to visit the families, to bring them food, books, news and whatever else they might have needed or wanted. Miep was very generous but also modest. On new year's eve she baked them a cake, even though sugar was sold on rations. Mr. Frank offered her a piece of the cake but she said "None for me, thank you." because she knew that they hadn't had cake in a very long time, when Mr. Frank insisted, she said "I couldn't.". Miep went to a party, she made sure to remember everything to tell them the

Charging Sales Tax on Internet Purchases

Charging Sales Tax on Internet Purchases Internet purchases should not have sales tax because internet shopping is supposed to be convenient for the consumer. After doing some research online I came to an article called the Incidental Economist. After reading I too had to agree that your average home eBay seller and other individual small business whose profit is less than 10,000 dollars a year should not have to do the states job of pursuing a sales tax.Was not the sales tax already paid when the Reseller first bought the product? I feel it should be his or her own profit if they are selling things that once belonged to them or in order for the seller to acquire the product in the first place it had to be bought. I feel that this is another way for the state to capitalize on a double taxing loophole. On the other hand, there is a down-side to this. With technology evolving, more consumers are turning to the internet for the ease of shopping, bill paying, and other amenities.Imposing a sales tax could improve the economy of a state by using the money from the tax to mend roads, fund schools, and implement programs in the community. The state should be responsible for making sure that sales tax is enforced not the small business seller. The state should have some program that monitors transactions on the web to enforce such a law that would make paying sales tax hard to avoid. I also feel that this sales tax should be imposed on large retailers only.Your average homeowner who wants to get rid of a few things by selling them online should not be responsible for charging sales tax. To me this is very similar to charging sales tax at a yard sale; it just is not going to happen. Works Cited Stim, Richard. Sales Tax on the Internet – Free Legal Information – Nolo. 2010. 2010 . Journal 3 The Birds coer The Birds through and through an analysis of the antheral person gazes. How is Melanie Daniels origin squandern from her? why? When we analyze the movie theatre The Birds through the male gaze we see through the eyes of Mitch, or Mitchs point of view as he seems to view her for her sexuality and hostility. She seems to want Mitch to watch her and goes out of her way to be sure that he does. In a nonher prognosis as she is retention the lovebirds in the ski tow she seems in some ways to be posing for the gentleman in the elevator with her. As she farewells the elevator her eyes seem to go to the side in a very cautious manner to see if the man is watching as she leaves the elevator. She seems to experience the antecedent and desire of her sexuality as we view her through the camera lens system in the same way as ane might view individual who is on display and want to be seen. This especially can be seen when Melanies has come on to Mitch in some highly suggestive manners and he tells her, back in your gilded coop Melanie Daniels. He seems to sugg est that she in fact is too much for him to sinkle sexually and mentally, and the bird chicken coops symbolizes that maybe Melanie sees herself as one of those love birds and seeks love, and freedom from her sustain cage in life. Melanie is seen as a woman of strength and grace who is not acrophobic to go after what she wants and does not mete out who knows it.She is also aggressive and daring, as well as independent which makes all of these things admirable to some men, but could also frighten some men. The film seems to follow the ideology of investigate and punish we see this when Melanie is scanty from her supply for defying the patriarchal rules. Melanies forefinger is taken away when she gets attacked by the birds. When she is acquire attacked she is moaning in a sexual way as if she were getting raped by the birds. Symbolizing how she is macrocosm stripped from her aggressiveness and confidence. Showing us how vulnerable she really is.The final step that tells us that her power has been completely removed is when we see her red nails ruined. In the film Sunset Boulevard Norma Desmond is seen as a sympathetic character towards the middle of the film when the auditory modality notices that she is stuck in her historical, liveness in a dream, waiting for the cameras. It is her egoistic view and her actions that make the audition feel shitty and experience her. We can also sympathize when she cuts her wrist because Joe has gone out to hunt on the movie script with Betty and thinks he is cheating on her. She makes the audience feel bad for her. When she finds out that there exit be no film she goes raging in disbelief In the last scene we see a evaporate in of Normas face this causes her to timbre and seem crazy with the help of the lighting. This makes the audience feel somewhat compassionate and liberality for her. It seems that Norma Desmond has the most power in the film.Sunset Boulevard being a film noir takes part of the castration complex. She is seen as a vulture aggressive and waiting for its prey so she can attack it making her a femme fatales. We see this when she sees Joe. She jumps all over him tries to bargain for him, making him want to stay. Joe being in the financial crisis that he was in do him vulnerable and susceptible to Normas control. too in the film we see when she goes and buys Joe a suit, not knowing what to get the line owner tells him to get the expensive one that she is paying making him not be the provider. It is seen again when Joe goes to the pharmacy to buy Norma cigarettes. She draws him the money and Joe seems to be hesitant to take it. It seems that his male provider ego seems to not approve of the money given to him by No rma. It gets to a point that Joe actually starts to get use to the life he has. We can see Norma is in control over Joe because she takes away his life because he is living her. Making her have the power in the film. Journal 5 Out of the past Why is Jeff Bailey considered a classic film noir anti hoagy? Discuss the use of the male gaze in reference to the two central effeminates, Kathie and Ann. Jeff Bailey is seen as a classic film noir anti hero in Out of the past.An anti-hero is a star that does not always make choices that audiences would make, or has different, more unsound motivations than a classifiable hero. He can be shown to make poor or unethical choices in time is still intended to get the sympathy of the audience. This adds a complexity to the films and challenges many of traditions of belles-lettres and cinema. This makes us question the character of this protagonist, and moreover we are forced to follow and sympathise with him, because he carries the story. Je ff perfectly fits into this category. When he has the flashback of when he goes to Mexico to go pay heed for Kathie who has taken 40000 dollars.Kathie being a perfect example of a femme fatale seduces him and makes him fall in love with her. She does this so he doesnt turn her in, messing with his tune orders. At the end Jeff is killed by Kathie because he has ran away with her not following the norms that the audience would expect, sending a subliminal pass on the consequences if one were to act in that manner. The male gaze is used in the film and we can see it in the two central female actresses Kathie and Ann. The way they are portrayed through the male gaze is very different. We see Ann as a non seductive woman, that has an angelic face. The apparel she wears are not revealing and leave room for imagination. While Kathie on the other hand is seen as a very seductive women that does whatever it takes to get what she wants. Also the lighting used for each actress is different. For Kathie at times we see she is in a dark background and we cant see her face. Making her a mysterious, distrustful character. While Ann on the other hand is always in the light and we see her face symbolizing innocence. The angles at which they are filmed are also a factor. When Kathie is being filmed we see that she is spirit down at Jeff, making her look superior. With Ann she is always at eye level with Jeff. Journal 6 Is guide on Lola, candidature truly a feminist film or does the male gaze still apply to this film? The film Run Lola, Run follows the feminist film conjecture but still has some male gaze point of views. The lead female character in Run Lola Run, is the heroine. Lola comes to the drive home of her boyfriend Manni, which disrupts the popular model, norm of men portrayed as the heroes of society. This film is set in Berlin where Manni loses a small dowery of his mob-bosss money and relies on Lola to have his life. She has twenty minutes to gather 100,000 a nd collect him at a designated location or Manni will be killed. Not only is Run Lola Run unique because the woman is the heroine, but also because it combines animation and hand held camera to create a renewing of experiences through different types of shot. The literacy design is join with a limited dialogue and more action, the film goes against the norm of popular cinema. Lola shows the audience that she has the power to shape what is going on around her, throughout each round. During the of course of the film we see the spicy theory in action, there are lead realities that play out. Each segment concludes with a different outcome. The choices of the main characters, Lola, alter the ending. Lola proves to be a strong and compelling person through examples such as her glass bust scream. At one point it seems to own mystic powers, when it affected a game of roulette that Lola needed to win in order to acquire money to action Manni. There are other aspects of Lolas power, as in her intense ladder throughout the entire film, robbing her father as well as helping in robbing of the supermarket, and saving another mans life by simply holding his hand.Although she is white and slender, has bright dyed red hair, is very athletic, has tattoos, and is not the average beauty. The film not only challenges societal view of what a woman should be, it also undermines the way films are commonly used to cook up a reality for the viewer by going against the norm of shots, narrative, time, and the power of the individual. Lola is the writer of her own life, she takes an active role in her story as well as others.
